Community & Friendship

Community plays a big role in successful ageing

“Living well” and “being well” go hand in hand.

The social and physical environment we live in plays a major role in how we age. Where you live influences your lifestyle, opportunities, and overall well-being.

A community with a strong sense of belonging can have a profound impact on your quality of life, making it an essential factor in supporting your health and happiness.

"When I came back from the hospital two wonderful people in the village said – ‘Mary, we’re going to do your shopping for you, and they still do my shopping. I make a list and ring them when they’re going, and they get what I need."

- Mary

Socialising and solitude – the perfect blend

Settlers Lifestyle Village is the perfect place for social butterflies and introverts alike. The beauty of Settlers is that you can do as much or as little as you want, be involved or just enjoy the solitude

Collaborative Community

Residents are actively involved in our community. We work together to achieve more through our unified culture and shared knowledge.

Everyone has a say in what happens, creating a true sense of community and belonging. We understand that autonomy is crucial to well-being. The resident wellbeing group and residents committee, as well as activities and transportation, are all resident-led.

There is a strong sense of togetherness in our community

Study after study has found that health and psychological well-being improves for seniors when they have friends. But as we age, our social circles can shrink. We retire from work, our kids move away, and loved ones pass on. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

That’s not what we want for our residents.

Social isolation places older adults in jeopardy of both poor health and low psychological well-being. For this reason, Settlers Lifestyle Village has been designed to foster interaction. We offer a range of amenities and common spaces for people to come together. Residents are always looking out for each other, as are our staff members.

If you want to start a group, you start it. You’re not being told ‘No you can’t because we’ve already organised it’. You just say ‘Can I have the room on a certain day’ and away you go.

- Bruce

In other villages, everything is structured – but here we have more autonomy.

- Mary

We have about 350 friends now that we never had before.

- Barbara

We often say ‘What would we be doing if we weren’t here’. I don’t think we would be as happy. We wouldn’t have the friends we have here.

- Shirley

You’re here just to enjoy yourself. That’s the fun of it! There is so much to do if you want to do it, and if you don’t, just stay home.

The staff at Settlers are really wonderful . . . They put their heart and soul into this complex, and make sure everyone is happy and joining in. There is even a get-together for men, they bring us together for a meeting once a week. No one is isolated . . . You live longer if you aren’t” – Precious.

Supporting our residents during their senior years is a great honour for us. We invest a lot of time and energy into making our community a friendly one. It is no wonder we have been awarded the very best large lifestyle village on the North Island multiple times.
