With summer well underway, it’s the perfect opportunity to get out of your retirement apartment in Auckland and enjoy the season to the fullest. Spending time with friends and family while eating ice cream and basking in the sunshine has never been more appealing!
Below, we’ve listed 6 excellent activities for spending a great Auckland summer. Invite some friends, pick up the grandkids, and create a summer filled with memories!
1. Beach Day at Mission Bay
On a hot sunny day, Mission Bay is the place to be! Loved as an excellent location in Auckland for swimming and sunbathing, the beach is surrounded by picturesque views of Rangitoto Island. During the hottest hours of the day, beachgoers can also find respite from the heat at one of the many superb restaurants or cafes that sit along the waterfront, including Movenpick, Portofino, Bodrum Kitchen, and more!
2. Excellent Views from the Sky Tower
If you’re feeling like a day out in the town, consider taking a ride to the observation deck of the Sky Tower. At 328 metres tall, the view from the deck is impressive, to say the least! Stand on the glass-bottomed floor for an unnerving look at the streets and cars below. You can also go during the evening and enjoy a breathtaking sunset, night-time views, and elevated dining—literally!
3. Fishing Trip with Friends
What better way to spend a summer’s day than out on the water? Why not take a friend and join a fishing tour out around Auckland? There are plenty of excellent touring opportunities to consider such as Zefiro Luxury Charters and Ultimate Charters NZ who regularly send out fishing tours and island explorer trips.
4. Play Mini-Golf in an Enchanted Forest
For a fun and affordable activity that’s great for the whole family, the Enchanted Forest Mini Golf course is a perfect choice. Come with friends or bring the grandchildren and enjoy a game of mini golf in Onehunga. With mature trees and gardens surrounding it and 18 full-length mini-golf holes, you can bring along a picnic and make a day of it!
It’s also not very far from Dress Smart Outlet Shopping Centre if you or the grandkids are keen for some shopping!
5. Have a Picnic or BBQ in the Park
Organise a picnic or BBQ out in your local park and catch up with friends and family in the best of settings. Auckland has some of the best spots to gather around for a sizzling BBQ such as Long Bay Regional Park and Cornwall Park. You can provide the food yourself or ask everyone to bring a plate to share.
6. Whale and Dolphin Watching
Whale and dolphin watching is the ultimate pastime for marine lovers young and old! If you would love to experience breathtaking encounters with marine wildlife, join one of the unique dolphin and whale spotting tours held by Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari.
If that’s not enough to tempt you, each ticket purchased also contributes to Marine Mammal Conservation in New Zealand. You’ll get to enjoy a boat ride while helping with Auckland’s conservation efforts!
