Christmas is often a time of reflection, tradition, and family gatherings. Many retirees have spent decades hosting Christmas in their own homes, full of the hustle and bustle (a.k.a. stress and joy) of family events.
But what happens when they move to a village? We asked residents of Settlers Lifestyle Village how their festive season here compares to their previous celebrations. As they reflect, they describe the experience of connection, relaxation, and joy without having to be the “hostess with the mostess”!
How does spending the festive season at Settlers differ from celebrating in your previous home?
For many residents, it’s a refreshing change. One resident shared, “Settlers is my home. For the first time in years, I’ll actually be spending Christmas at home instead of rushing to travel at the last minute. It’s so relaxing to just enjoy the buildup to Christmas, with the added bonus of plenty of festive activities organised by residents and management alike.”
Others enjoy stepping back from hosting duties. “When I lived in my own home, I felt responsible for organizing everything. Now, the family does it and I can ‘just be there’. Love it!” one resident remarked.
Importantly, for those without nearby family, the village fosters a strong sense of community. “A resident does not need to feel alone because there is always companionship, especially if their family is not nearby or abroad. We have become a family, and the wonderful staff are so caring of us.” another shared, highlighting the inclusive spirit of Settlers.
Others marvelled at the sheer number of options for getting in the festive spirit. The most striking thing is the wide range of activities and presentations available and the wide range of people involved – both residents and staff. Nobody could be short of something to do, people to talk with, entertainment to listen to and share with others, “fancy things” to eat, and so on, and so on. In short, there is never a dull moment.
It can be summed up by one resident – “The festive season at Settlers is exactly that, ‘A Season”’ because since the beginning of Dec when the first balcony lights were lit up, we felt that Christmas had arrived early and it has only got better with the various Christmas celebrations and functions in the build-up to the big day. We especially enjoyed the Settler’s Christmas dinner party and are looking forward to the New Year function as well.
If we were still in our home, we would not have had the opportunity to meet and enjoy the social company of the many friendly Settlers residents, we have been fortunate to meet some really special friends”.
What has been the most surprising or unexpected aspect of the festive season here?
One common theme among residents is how much effort everyone puts into creating a festive atmosphere. From the tasteful decorations that strike a perfect balance to the numerous activities starting right from December 1st, the spirit of the season truly lights up the village.
“The willingness of residents and management to create an appropriate festive environment throughout the village both inside and out,” one resident noted.
Another appreciated the inclusivity, saying, “There’s a quiet respect for Christmas here, even for those who aren’t religious or follow different beliefs.”
“The most surprising aspect is the fact that the residents are so involved in the running of the various Christmas and village functions, they really do go above and beyond. This time of year brings us socially together as the functions flow. We have the choice to attend, but sometimes a relaxing cup of tea on the balcony is welcome”.
What do you enjoy most about this time of year at Settlers?
The sense of togetherness, relaxation, and giving back emerged as standout highlights.
Residents shared how the friendly atmosphere and social activities help create a warm and contented environment. One commented, “It’s about enjoying good friends, good company, and inclusive activities in a relaxed atmosphere.”
“There is always someone to talk with and say “Have you seen X?” “What do you think of Y?” “How did they get those lights up there?”
Some residents also appreciated the opportunity to give back during the season. “The happy relaxed air of the seasonal time, happy contentment. Giving to people with food or gift donations who are not well off by various residents who organise these charity gifts.”
Another resident summed it up beautifully, calling Settlers their “forever place” and expressing gratitude for the care and atmosphere cultivated during the season.
Is there anything you miss about your previous festive traditions?
Interestingly, most residents felt they weren’t missing out at all. Many appreciated the shift away from the pressure of hosting and instead enjoyed the chance to relax and fully partake in meaningful moments. “We get the best of both worlds!” remarked one couple.
For one resident, when asked what they missed remarked, “Christmas Eve ugly shirt and cocktails with family. Perhaps I should organise one here?”!”
For others, the warm, quiet, and supportive environment more than makes up for any past customs. “The quiet friendliness and support one gives or receives is reassuring and precious. Especially as we are all Senior Citizens and not as mobile anymore,” one resident reflected.
